The Department of Thermal Science and Energy Engineering originated from the specialty of metallurgical furnace which was established in 1958. By merging with the specialty of oxygen-generating machinery, the department was established in 1982 under the name of the Department of Thermal Energy Engineering. In 2007, it was renamed as the Department of Thermal Science and Energy Engineering.

The department enrolls about 150 undergraduate students annually, and grants undergraduate degrees in two specialties of “Energy and Power Engineering” and “New Energy Science and Engineering”. “Energy and Power Engineering” belongs to National first-class undergraduate specialty construction site and Beijing Universities "Key construction first-class specialty". The department grants doctorate and master's degrees in the discipline of Power Engineering and Engineering Thermal Physics. The main specialties for graduate program include: 1) Thermal Engineering, 2) Engineering Thermal Physics, 3) Refrigeration and Cryogenic Engineering. About 90 postgraduate students and 15 doctoral students are enrolled each year.

Responding to the needs of energy saving, emission reduction, green energy, artificial environment and the national emerging strategic industries, a modern curriculum system is constructed and featured by balancing theoretical teaching and practical teaching, strengthening scientific innovation and international exchanges. The system consists of serialized courses including national excellent course, national resource sharing course, national bilingual demonstration course and Beijing excellent course, "High quality undergraduate course" in Beijing Universities and so on. A well-structured teaching staff has been formed, including chief scientist for 973 project, subject expert for 863 project, subject experts of national key R & D plan, national outstanding teacher, new century talent, national outstanding youth fund winner, Beijing famous teacher, Beijing excellent teaching team and so on. There are 45 full-time teachers, including 16 professors and 19 associate professors. It has a number of national and provincial teaching and scientific research platforms, such as national overseas expertise introduction center for discipline innovation, Beijing engineering research center, Beijing key laboratory, national international cooperation base and Beijing demonstration center of experimental teaching, etc.

Facing the challenges of industrial energy conservation and emission reduction, the department puts emphasis on both fundamental theory research and applied technology development, and has formed remarkable features and obvious advantages in the areas of industrial energy conservation, gas separation, new clean energy, resources’ comprehensive utilization, multi-scale transmission, energy conversion and storage. The department has become an important national base for talent training and scientific research in the field of energy efficient utilization.

Overseas Expertise Introduction Center for Discipline Innovation in Industrial Energy Conservation and Energy-efficient Economy

Overseas Expertise Introduction Center for Discipline Innovation in Industrial Energy Conservation and Energy-efficient Economy was established with the approval of Ministry of Education and the State Bureau of Foreign Experts Affairs in 2013. The center has gathered more than 50 overseas experts with long-term cooperation and communication, including an Academician of the Australian Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Engineering, a TMS fellow and numerous members from famous international academic and engineering societies. The center has made remarkable contributions and outstanding achievements in the following aspects: 1) resource-saving and efficient metallurgical technology, 2) comprehensive utilization of complex residual energy and industrial wastes, 3) systematic thermodynamics and energy-efficient economy. In recent years, cooperated with other domestic platforms, such as University Alliance for Industrial Energy Efficiency, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Industrial Innovation Alliance for Energy Saving and Emission Reduction and so on, the center has been working on innovative talents training, frontier technology development and promotion, international cooperation and exchange, and plays an important leading role in the innovative research on industrial energy conservation and energy-efficient economy.

Beijing Key Laboratory of Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction for Metallurgical Industry

Beijing Key Laboratory of Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction for Metallurgical Industry, relying on the resources of University of Science and Technology Beijing, was approved by Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission in June 2011. Based on the major needs of energy intensive industries, the laboratory has been working on the frontier scientific research in the field of energy saving and emission reduction for the process industries including steel, nonferrous, machinery and chemical industries. The laboratory has made significant achievements in non-blast-furnace ironmaking, efficient clean combustion, energy development and replacement, systematic energy management and comprehensive emission treatment, etc. The laboratory has formed three distinctive research directions: 1) modeling and optimization of metallurgical thermal process, 2) high-efficiency energy conversion and systematic energy saving, 3) micro/nano composite materials for thermal conduction, insulation and storage. The laboratory provides the driving force for the development of industrial energy conservation and emission reduction technology by integrating multi-disciplinary comprehensive advantages, undertaking major national and enterprise projects, strengthening the basic research of industrial energy conservation and emission reduction technology, and breaking through the bottleneck of original innovation of new technology, new equipment and new technology.

Beijing Higher Institution Engineering Research Center of Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection

Beijing Higher Institution Engineering Research Center of Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection was established in January 1997 relying on the resources of University of Science and Technology Beijing and approved by Beijing Municipal Education Commission in November 2009. The center has been focusing on the research and development of energy conservation and environmental protection technology to meet the needs of the nation and Beijing. With a longstanding effort, the center has carried out many fruitful demonstration and promotion projects in the areas of regenerative combustion, recovery of residual heat and energy, desulphurization and denitrification, CO2 capture, waste incineration, water treatment, distributed energy resources, utilization of off-peak power, etc. Currently, multiple high-level research orientations have been gradually formed, including energy conversion and cascaded utilization, clean-combustion and pollution reduction, new energy-saving process and materials, new energy technology, gas preparation and treatment, etc. The center has established a scientific research and development and technology promotion platform with complete discipline team, outstanding scientific research achievements, smooth transformation of achievements, and significant comprehensive benefits. Through the cooperation of production, teaching and research, the advantages of scientific research cooperation have been fully demonstrated and remarkable social and economic benefits have been achieved.

Department of Environmental Science and Engineering (DESE) is focusing on higher education and research in the field of Environmental Science and Engineering, founded in 1996, affiliated to the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB), which could be dated back to 1952. DESE was reconstructed in 1996 by combination of three institutes of mining technology, safety engineering and geology engineering. Former Institute of IESE was established in 1952. In recent years through introducing young talents and well-known scientists from high level institutes as well as oversee scholars, DESE is becoming a famous Institute in the field of Environmental Science and Engineering in China. The faculty members of DESE are now 42 persons, among them 10 Professors, 11 Associate Professors, etc. Besides, some well-known scientists have been invited as our guest or honor professors such as Ruth Black (Yale University, USA), Michael Hoffmann (CalTech, USA), Hans Richnow (UFZ, Germany), Fengchang Wu (China Academy of Environmental Science).

DESE has established exchange and cooperation networks with many world class universities, organizations and enterprises in terms of mutual visits, collaborative scientific research and joint training programs.

Beijing Key Laboratory of Resource-Oriented Treatment of Industrial Pollutants
