The School of Energy and Environmental Engineering (hereinafter referred to as "the SEEE") dates from the early period of USTB in 1952. Over the last seven decades, it is now composed of Department of Thermal Science and Energy Engineering and Department of Environmental Science and Engineering. The SEEE offers four undergraduate programs, namely, Energy & Power Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, and Sustainable Energy Science & Engineering. The two subjects (Energy & Power Engineering and Environmental Science & Engineering) are strongly supported and developed by China’s "211 Project" and "Platform for National Advanced Disciplines Innovation" program; Environmental Engineering is on national construction list of national characteristic specialty, and in 2014 it passed the China Engineering Education Accreditation. The SEEE holds two first-tier doctoral programs (the Power Engineering & Engineering Thermophysics, Environmental Science & Engineering) as well as post-doctoral research stations conducting work on these fields, including eight second-tier programs, which are Thermal Engineering, Engineering Thermophysics, Power Machinery & Engineering, Fluid Machinery & Engineering, Refrigeration & Low Temperature Engineering, Chemical Process Machinery, Environmental Science, and Environmental Engineering. Thermal Engineering has been designated by the government as "Key National Discipline", while the Power Engineering & Engineering Thermophysics and Environmental Engineering as "Key Disciplines in Beijing".
The SEEE now has an excellent integrated teaching team of experts, professors, and academic leaders. There are 49 full-time teachers, consisting of 17 professors, 3 senior engineers and 24 associate professors; including the national "973 chief scientist", "863 theme experts", winners of the "New Century Supportive Project for Outstanding Talents" (sponsored by the Ministry of Education), researchers of the Hundred Talents Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, winners of the Beijing Teaching Masters, and other distinguished teachers.
The SEEE, focusing on the major needs of national science and technology development, has undertaken many cooperation research projects at home and abroad, such as grants from the national 973 program, 863 program, the National High Technology Research and Development Program, National Science and Technology Major Project, Natural Science Foundation of China, National Defense 973 program, Key Foundations of Ministry of Education and Beijing. The total scientific research fund has reached nearly RMB 500 million. The SEEE has obtained important scientific research achievements in the energy conservation and emission reduction, environmental management and related fields. Moreover, in the last five years, we have won 4 national scientific and technological progress awards, 15 provincial and ministerial level awards, 91 invention patents; more than 600 scientific research papers were published in SCI and EI index journals.
The SEEE focuses on practical innovation. Several teaching and research bases have been built, such as Beijing Key Laboratory of Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction for Metallurgical Industry, Beijing Higher Institution Engineering Research Center of Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection, Discipline Innovation Base for Industrial Energy Conservation and Energy-efficient Economy (Ministry of Education), Beijing International Collaboration Base on Urban and Domestic Waste Management. We have 3 engineering centers and key laboratories at ministerial and provincial level (Beijing Key Laboratory of Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction for Metallurgical Industry, Beijing Higher Institution Engineering Research Center of Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection, Beijing Key Laboratory of Resource-oriented Treatment of Industrial Pollutants), 2 research centers (Sustainable Energy Research Center USTB, Smart Energy Research Center USTB) and 4 bases (including Discipline Innovation Base for Industrial Energy Conservation and Energy-efficient Economy (Ministry of Education, State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs), National International Cooperation Base on Environment and Energy, Beijing International Collaboration Base on Urban and Domestic Waste Management). Students have made many achievements in scientific and technological innovation and subject competitions, with a participation rate of 90%. Many students have won awards in competitions such as the "Challenge Cup" National Undergraduate curricular academic science and technology works, National University Student Social Practice and Science Contest on Energy Saving and Emission Reduction, China Undergraduate Physics Tournament, Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling. In the past five years, more than 1,000 undergraduate students won awards in national, provincial and ministerial competitions, including more than 50 Grand or first prize.
The SEEE obtains excellent international incorporation and maintains close relations with well-known universities, research institutes, academic organizations and large enterprises in dozens of countries and regions, including the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Australia, Sweden, Canada, Russia, Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Until now, we have completed dozens of international cooperation projects, successfully held a number of large international academic conferences, regularly invited well-known experts and scholars at home and abroad to carry out the deep cooperation in teaching and research, and established a joint student international exchange program. More than 50% of the students choose to continue with postgraduate education (at home and abroad).
In the future, with the goal of building first-class disciplines and a first-class school, the SEEE will forge ahead in order to achieve the beautiful Chinese Dream, followed by national strategies and aimed at the international frontier.
