Xi Yanaoming:Diligence and Hard Work Get Paid
My name is Xi Yanaoming. I’m from Hubei Province. I have studied in School of Energy and Environmental Engineering (USTB) since 2017, majoring in Energy and Power Engineering. After three years of hard work and professional learning, I have got a better understanding of my major and have got a good results from it. So far I have ranked on top of my department and won scholarships as well as other prizes for many times — People’s Second-Class and Third-Class Scholarships, the first prize in Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction Competition for twice, the second prize in Refrigeration Competition, the third prize in Smart Car Competition and in ‘Cradle Cup’ Innovation Competition, to name a few. Last year, I got a comprehensive score of 96.61, ranking first in my department. The excellent performance in my junior year made me successfully won the National Scholarship in the 2019-2020 academic year. Recently, I have been recommended to go further study as a post-graduate.
Learning is the top priority of students — I still remember that when I was a freshman. I was curious about my college life and didn’t pay much attention on my study. I spent a large amount of time on my interests, such as singing, playing the piano, practicing calligraphy and so on. Fortunately, I quickly learned to balance learning and the development of extracurricular interests. From No. 32 in my freshman year, to the top 10 in my sophomore year and No.1 in my junior year, I have been constantly breaking through myself. Learning is a wonderful thing — the more seriously you take it, the more you will love it — and it will repay you with knowledge and achievements.
In my spare time, I took active part in science and technology competitions to improve my ability to propose, analyze and solve problems. I have always played a leading role in my team, and together we have won prizes for many times. Taking part in these competitions has left me many precious memories. What makes me unforgettable is the preparation of the Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction Competition in my junior year. Because of the Covid-19, we can’t perform experiments or make devices in our school, so that we have to do all these at home, which is more challengeable. To get over these difficulties, I tried my best and set up the experimental system in my house. To my relief, I successfully completed the experimental work. I really enjoy the process of preparing the technology competitions, and I believe that the original intention of participating in these competitions is not only to win the prize, but also to improve our abilities and skills.
Apart from studying hard and participating in science and technology competitions, I attempted to do some student work to improve my ability to deal with people, through which I gained a group of like-minded and sincere friends. I am the commissary in charge of studies in my class, and I have been a member in the Sports and Entertainment Department of USTB Student’s Union. I can never forget the experience of holding a campus singer contest. I was assigned to work on the operating desk, mainly responsible for the playing of songs properly. Although it seems like a simple task, you must maintain a high concentration throughout the whole process, because a small mistake may lead to chaos. This experience let me know the difficulty of holding a large-scale event, but I have a great sense of accomplishment, and I think all efforts are worth it.
Doing volunteer work is also a part of my college life. During this summer when the epidemic is still serious, many parts of the Yangtze River basin suffered disastrous floods, so the work of controlling the flood is urgent. I took advantage of my vacation time to involve myself to the voluntary activities of flood controlling of the Yangtze River near my home. Doing volunteer work can fill my heart with love to other people, as well as the society and the country.
There is no doubt that a combination of work and rest is very important. I have many talents and I am also keen on participating in various recreational and sports activities. In the aspect of sports, I got high grades (85+) in the annual physical examination, and I take part in the school sports meetings for many times, in which I have won the second place of standing long jump, the seventh place of 800 meters and other awards. In calligraphy, I have reached level 9, and the spring couplets, pasted on the door of my house, are always written by myself every Spring Festival. As for music, I have passed the 10th grade both of playing the piano as well as playing the Chinese lute. In my freshman year, I performed Letter Song at the New Year’s Show of my department. In my sophomore year, I was awarded the third winner in the campus singer contest of ‘I Sing My Song’. The cultivation of manifold talents really enriches my college life.
Looking back on the three years in USTB, I have achieved a lot. I believe that success is based on down-to-earth efforts, not on daydreams and luck. I feel grateful to my parents, my teachers, my friends and everyone I have met in my college life — without their help and company, I can’t become who I am now or realize my dreams. I hope that in my postgraduate stage, I can work hard on my professional study and academic research so as to always keep my step to chase my dream!
