SEEE students contribute to “toilet revolution” and “poverty alleviation” in Qin'an county, Gansu Province
Qin'an is one of the key counties launched poverty alleviation and development in the country. In recent years, with the in-depth development of targeted poverty alleviation work, Qin'an has gradually become another position for the school to develop moral education. In July 2019, a group of young students appeared in every corner of Qin'an County, Gansu Province. These group of students have held discussions with the village cadres and the villagers as well. They distributed leaflets and questionnaires for further research on the reduction of poverty in the county.
These group of students was composed of graduate students from the School of Energy and Environmental Engineering (SEEE) of the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB), with a specialization in environmental engineering. They have seized the opportunities of poverty alleviation between the USTB and Qin'an, to come to participate in local science and technology services. They used their professional directors to understand the villagers' toilet status, the needs of toilet renovation, and also to popularize the knowledge of toilet renovation to solve the toilet "difficulties" for the villagers.
The toilet revolution is one of the "three revolutions" of the rural environment. In 2016, the State Council issued the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan for Sanitation and Health", which requires that by 2020, the coverage of rural sanitary toilets should reach more than 85%. For a long time, China's rural human settlement environment construction has a lot of debts. The wastewater discharged from toilets in some villages is treated at will, which does not only pollutes the environment and water sources, but also easily leads to the breeding of bacteria, posing a threat to human health.
Although the process of the survey was difficult, it was also fruitful. The students had some challenges in understanding the local dialect and could only confirm it over and over again. The village toilets were dry and the sanitary conditions were very poor. They used 10 days to held discussions with relevant departments and visited to 6 poor villages to complete 317 household surveys and 317 valid questionnaires. They mastered a large amount of first-hand data, and also launched "Toilet Classroom" theme to promote activities and to raise students' toilet hygiene awareness.
After returning to school, they began to write a report on "Investigation Report on the Status Quo of Rural Toilets in Qin'an County" and other documents based on the survey data and scientific research results and submitted them to the Qin'an County government together with the technical transformation plan. After that, they selected a service company that can realize toilet renovation, and arrived in Qin'an again in September 4, 2019. They officially started the pilot work ofthe toilet revolution. The implementation of this pilot officially marked the grounding of the “University of Science and Technology Beijing” sample of Qin’an toilet revolution.
From the preliminary preparation to the completion of the toilet and even the follow-up of the long-term guarantee, the students clearly understand the gaps between theory and practice. More over they applied what they have learned and used it on the ground. The connections between the people of Qin'an County were more deeply and the new impetus was also added to the poverty alleviation and hat removal of villages in Qin'an County.
