According to the latest data released by American ESI (Essential Science Indicator) database on November 15, 2019, environmental/ecological discipline of USTB entered into ESI global disciplines ranking top 1% (ranking 1036th between 1047 institutions). According to the latest statistics of ESI, from January 1, 2009 to now, 539 ESI papers have been published in the environmental/ecological discipline of our university, with a total citation of 4518, citations per paper of 8.38 and 2 highly cited papers. By the end of this period, five disciplines of our school have entered the top 1% of ESI: Materials Science, Chemistry, Engineering, Computer Science and Environmental Science/Ecology.

At present, ESI has become an important indicator to evaluate the academic level and influence of academic institutions, countries and regions. In the international academia, the top 1% of ESI disciplines are generally regarded as high-level disciplines, reflecting their basic research level and academic competitiveness from one side.

Environmental Science and Engineering in our university consists of two sub-disciplines, environmental science and environmental engineering. The right to confer doctoral degrees of mining environmental engineering was obtained in 2004. The right to confer doctoral degrees of the sub-discipline of environmental engineering was obtained in 2006. The right to confer doctoral degrees of the first-level discipline of environmental engineering was obtained in 2010. Environmental engineering was rated as a key discipline in Beijing in 2012. It successfully applied for the establishment of the undergraduate major of environmental science in 2016. And in 2017, environmental science and engineering ranked in the top 20% (B+) in the fourth round of subject evaluation of the Ministry of Education. Current research fields have four research interests, including air pollution control and recycling, water pollution control theory and technology, soil remediation and solid waste recycling, environmental impact assessment and human health research.

The construction level, scientific research and innovation ability and personnel training quality of environmental science and engineering discipline have been greatly improved, presenting a good and stable development trend. environmental/ecological discipline ranked among ESI Global Disciplines Ranking top 1% marks our university has a strong international academic influence in this field and it is an important achievement made by the USTB in promoting the construction of "double first-rates".
