Summer Course of safe recycling of nutrients
The School of Energy and Environmental Engineering, University of Science and Technology Beijing organized a summer course on the topic of safe recycling of nutrients to promote students to learn more about environmental engineering, improve students' English communication skills, and keep them abreast of the latest international research trends and development of frontier. For this course, Prof. Björn Vinnerås were invited to give lectures from August 24th to 27th, 2020.
Professor in Environmental Engineering at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala Sweden. He has during more than two decades been performing research and education on technology for circular systems to recycle the plant nutrients from solid household waste and wastewater. Within his research portfolio he has been part of the development of the self sanitizing and biodegradable single use toilet Peepoo, as well as the alkaline dehydrating system for producing a solid fertilizer from human urine. The research is focused on technologies that enable plant nutrient recycling while it blocking the spread of diseases into the environment.
The themes of this course were “Global waste – Generation and future”, “Wastewater management - Flows of nutrient and possible treatment options”, “Risks associated with circular systems”, and “Future systems for a circular society”. The aim with the course is to give the student knowledge in current waste and wastewater management techniques with focus on technologies for plant nutrient recovery and reuse. Meanwhile, it also promoted international teaching and academic exchanges, laying a good foundation for improving our school's teaching practice and promoting the construction of disciplines.
